"DRONGAN CASTLE
The earliest references to Drongan Castle date from the fourteenth century. A number of old charters from that period refer to the lands and their owners. In the early 1300s, the lands were divided amongst various members of the family of d'Aubigne, or Albini, of Ayr. Adam of Ayr owned Shield, Knockguldron and 'Antitigille'. John, his son, held the 'penny lands' of Nether Shield. The 'two-penny' lands of Shield were owned by Reginald, son of Reginald of Ayr, who was also a descendant of d'Aubigne. The name d'Aubigne has been spelled variously as Albini, Dibin or Dobney over the years.
In the latter part of the fourteenth century Alan Stewart bought Shield from John, son of d'Awbine. a descendant of Albini. Alan Stewart was the son of Alan Stewart, a cousin of the king."
1841 Sheil, Stair, two households. Jean 86 and Ann Linton, 14
1901 Walter Kerr 29, dairyman with wife Margaret 31 and sons Hugh and William 3 and 2. Mary McGinn 14 is a domestic servant and Thomas Kerr is boarding while working as a pitheadman
In 1919 the farm was put up for sale with the rest of the estate of Drongan, and Hugh Wallace bought the farm he had be renting.

1881 No entry found for the farm. The two tenants in the Valuation Rolls for 1885 are in neighbouring farms, so it is possible that the land was taken by them and the farm house may have been sub-let. There is an entry for John Wilson 36, a coal salesman living at Shields, 1, Stair. He has wife
