1851 Henry Howat  38, and Mungo Howat are joint farmers of 180 acres. Mungo's wife Jean27, and children Mungo, Sarah, Henry, andWilliam.  Servants are Hugh Wylie 19, Steel Murdoch 13, and Mary Riggs 16.
1861 Henry Howat 48 is farming 200 acres employing 2 men and 1 boy, and has his brother and his family living with him. They are Mungo Howat 42, wife Jane 36,  presumably their children Mungo 16, Sarah 15, Henry 13 William 11, James 7, John 5, Robert 4, Charles 2 and Thomas under 1. Marion Osborne 18, and Janet Clerk 17 are their domestic servants.
1871 Henry is farming 180 acres employing 3 labourers and 1 boy.  niece and nephews remaining are Sarah 24, dairymaid, Henry 22, ploughman, Robert 14, and Thomas 10. Servants are Daniel Milroy 34, Janet Aird 19, and Helen Murphy 17.
1881 census shows Henry Howat 70 farming 300 acres 170 arable employing 2 men and 3 girls and 1 boy.
He is unmarried but has Robert Howat 23, nephew, Jane Howat 22, niece by marriage, Henry Howat 3 nephew, and Crawford Howat G Niece 10 months.
Also living in are Martha Wilson 20 general servant, Agnes Strathdee 15 nurse, and William Bradley 75 farm servant.
1891 Henry is 80 and still farming with nephews William 40, and Robert 33 and his wife Jane 33 who is housekeeper. He has five grand nieces and servants Jane Hodge 18, Jane Russell 17, and James Tait 16
1901 and William and Robert are joint farmers. William is unmarried, but Robert and his wife Jane have five daughters and one son, Mungo aged 6.
