McTurk family in 18th century
Scotlands Places of 1855/57 gives reference to the name Polshiel in the estate books although they say there is no other reference to this spelling.
In old scots, according to the website Scots Words and Placenames, poll can mean "a slowmoving ditchlike stream flowing through carseland, a shallow pool, a marshy place, a sea pool, a creek or inlet or a marshy field". Sheil is a shepherds hut type building or a small cottage.

Mill
The mill lead starts away up the hill and is probaly about twice as long as the one at the Old Mill. Part of the mill pond has been reinstated as a feature; the lead ran under the Dumfries road to the mill.
Andy Howat: when I was young I remember the mill, there was a shaft came right through the barn with pulleys to drive the various machines and the mill wheel was there then but my dad got it taken away because my brothers and me used to get inside it and make it turn.
