In 1841 the Wilsons were at East Smithstone, Tarbolton.
1851 Janet Wilson  (Stewart)36 is farming 99 acres employing 2 agricultural labourers.  Her sons are Adam 15, William 11, John 6, and James 2. daughters Mary 13, Janet 8, Elizabeth 4.
Their servants are Agnes Young 20, dairymaid, Agnes Dunbar 20, and Adam Cunningham 19, ag lab.
Robert Sloan 33 and wife Elizabeth 30 were also at Laigh Tarbeg. Robert was a farm overseer.

1861 is Laigh Tarbeg. Janet is 45 farming 120 acres wmploying 2 men and 1 woman.  At home are Mary 22, William 20, Janet 18, John 16, Elizabeth 14 and James 12.  Their servants are Thomas Currie 17 and Janet Dunbar 23.

'In 1862, William Wilson, farmer in Laigh Tarbeg, gave a short speech on the state of farming in Ochiltree in centuries past. He noted that "then, only the crofts, or strips of land near the houses were cultivated, and the manure was carried out in baskets on the backs of the farmers' wives. Potatoes for long remained a rarity, being used at but two meals in the year - at the kirn and on New Year's Day - while half a dozen for seed were suspended in an old stocking above the fire-place. The first turnips grown in the parish were on the farm of Ochiltree Mains".'

1871 census has John Montgomerie 41 farming 120 acres arable and employing 7 labourers. Along with their family they have Jane Maxwell 14 niece and domestic, Grace Muncie 18 dairymaid, and Robert Nixon 17 farm servant. John Montgomerie was in East Tarelgin in 1861.

1881 census has John Montgomerie 51, and wife Agnes 41, six daughters and three sons farming 125 acres employing 1 man and 1 girl.
The Montgomerie family  moved  to  Nether  Guelt ,Cumnock.

1891 George Connell 45 and wife Jane 42 are at Laigh Tarbeg with their family Janet 17, George 9, Jane 5, and servants Mary Jane McCracken 21 and Isabella Gibson 16.

1901 George is 55 and Jane 52 and only George 19 and Jane 15 are still at home.




Morning Post 12 August 1848



'A number of stone arrow or spearheads or darts were discovered on the farm of Laigh Tarbeg. They had been separated and passed into the ownership of different people, and their whereabouts are no longer known.'

There doesn't appear to be a census return for this property for 1841 so we can't confirm who was the tenant involved in the discovery of the remains in his field, but it may have been Adam Wilson.

Laigh Tarbeg was  bought by Hugh F Watson , High Tarbeg and is  currently  farmed  by  his  son  Hugh  , with  robot milkers  installed.   There is also a bed and breakfast.
