The Valuation Roll for 1915 - House & Farm West Lowes OR Calton so perhaps it was always the same farm.
These two maps seem to show that West Lowes and Calton are perhaps the same farm. If not they are extremely close to each other.
The 1841 census shows Hugh Vallance, farmer 25 is farming Calton with his wife Helen (Baird) 25. They have 4 children - Helen 7, John 5, Hugh 3 & William 1 and are assisted by george Knox 20, Jane Wilson 25 and Mary Stewart 13.
The 1851 census for West Lowes shows Hugh Vallance 39 farmer of 95 acres, his wife Helen 35, children Helen 15, John 15, Hugh 13, William 10, Agness 8, Penelope 5, Catherine 4 and James 2. Elizabeth Taylor 16 is their house servant.
The 1861 census for Calton shows Hugh Vallance farming 94 acres with his wife Helen 45, son Hugh 23, daughter Penelope 16, son James 12, daughter Isabella 9, daughter Janet 7, son Robert 5, daughter jane 3, Janet Douglas 18 a domestic servant and John Gillespie 13 also a domestic servant.
The 1871 census shows Calton shows Hugh Vallance 59 now farming 120 acres arable assisted by his wife Ellen 56, daughter Janet Baird Vallance 17, son Robert 15, daughter Jane 13, their 5yr old grandson Hugh Vallance who was born in England and Mary Aird 23 a general domestic.
The 1881 census shows Lowes (West) Farm still being farmed by Hugh Vallance now 69 and a farmer of 120 acres arable employing 1 man, 1 boy and 2 girls. He is being assisted by his wife Helen 66, son Robert 25, Agnes Cooper 22 a general servant, Annie McKnight a 15yr old general servant and John Collins 15 a farm servant.
Hugh Vallance died 15/6/1889 at Glaisnock Street, Old Cumnock
The 1891 census shows Calton now being farmed by son Robert Vallance 45 along with his new wife Sarah Watson 27 whom he married in 1890 at Sorn. They are assisted by William Rush 18 farm servant, Mary Sharp 19 and Mary Vallance 16 both domestic servants.
The 1901 census for Calton shows Robert Vallance 45 farmer, Sarah Vallance 37 his wife, son Hugh 3, daughter Helen B. 1, Hugh McCartney 22 ploughman and 2 general domestics Sarah Wilson 18 and Jane Kirkland 12.
