Cairnhill, New Cumnock


Location 55 23 25N, 4 10 41W

Became a housing estate and a primary school had the same name. Most of the houses and the school are gone in recent years.
 
1841 Census
William Caldwell farmer 60 wife Elizabeth (Jamieson) and 5 children. William died 1843 and in 
1851 census his son George Caldwell 30 in the farmer with wife Elizabeth (McKerrow) 

1881 census shows Robert and Jane Somerville farming 235 acres along with sons and daughters and employing 1 girl. Robert was from Ireland.

1875 prop Mary McQueen Thomson Carmichael.  1885 tenant Robert Somerville.  1905 prop Michael Carmichael, tenant James Wight.  1930 no proprietor or tenant shown for the farm but about 150 houses have appeared.  1940 tenant James Houston.

Medal won by James Houston in 1931 for greatest number of points in potato section at dairy show. Medal from General Agricultural Association of Ayrshire.
