Braehead (1) of Craigston, Auchinleck

Location  above the  Bello Path leading  out  of  Lugar for  Muirkirk: 55 28 11N, 4 13 06W.

On 1855 Valuation Rolls as  property of Sir James Boswell, and  tenanted by John MacCormick,   Lands of Braehead of Craigston.

The 1851 census shows John McCormick 30 farming 150 acres and employing 3 labourers. He is assisted by his wife Jean 28 (Weir). Also living in Braehead are sons Robert 7, James 5, dtr Mary 3 and daughter Helen 4months. Sister-in-law Mary Weir 22 is there working as a farm servant along with sister-in-law Jessie Weir 15.  Brother-in-law Samuel Bennet and his wife Elizabeth (McCormick) and their 2 children are visiting. Employees listed are 1 female farm servant, 1 male farm servant and 1 male cow herd.

The 1861 census for Braehead shows John McCormick 42 farming 230 acres employing 2 men, 2 women and 1 boy. John is assisted by his wife Jane 39, son Robert 17, son James 15, dtrs Mary 12 and Helen 10, son John 5, 1 dairymaid, 1 female domestic servant, 2 ploughmen and 1 cow herd who is a boy age 12yrs

The 1871 census for Braehead shows John McCormick 52 farming 267 acres of which 200 are arable employing 2 labourers and 1 boy. Living there are his wife Jane 49, son Robert 27, daughter Mary 21, daughter Helen 19, niece Margaret McCormick 15, nephew James Taylor 13, 1 female domestic servant, 1 dairymaid, 1 male farm servant, 1 ploughman and 1 shepherd.

The 1881 census shows John McCormick 62 farming 286 acres of which 190 are arable employing 1 man, 2 girls and 1 boy. Also living at Braehead Farm are wife Jane 58, dtr Margaret 31, dtr Helen 29, son John 24, 2 male farm servants, 1 female domestic servant and 1 female general servant.

The 1891 census for Braehead shows John McCormick 72 farming with his wife Jane 69, unmarried daughter Margaret 40, daughter Helen Johnston (described as a doctor's wife), grandsons James 7 and John 1 Johnston, son John McCormick 33, 2 male farm servants and 2 domestic servants.
John McCormick died 12/6/1899

The 1901 census shows Jane McCormick age 79 and now a widow farming Braehead Farm with unmarried daughter Margaret 52, 1 ploughman, 1 male shepherd and 2 female domestic servants.

In March 1920
AUCHINLECK ESTATE . On the Auchinleck estate, the farms of Dixton and Braehead , adjoining the village of Lugar, have been purchased by the present tenant , the Messrs Craig and Miss McCormick respectively. 

John McCormick's father was Robert McCormick, Pencloe, New Cumnock and his mother was Mary Osbourne.
