Originally spelled Sclaithol (1654) or Sclatehole (at least to 1864. Approximately 100 acres in 1861. Roup in 1864. 153 acres in 1909.

1841 Two families, Colvilles and Reids.
Charles Colville 54, James 58, Jennet 48, Helen 14 William, and William Reid 27, Sarah 24, Jennet 3 and Adam 1.
1851 Charles Colville 66 is farming 100 acres employing 1 labourer.  His sister in law Janet 57 is housekeeper and dairymaid, niece Janet 25 is a dressmaker, and nephew William is 20 and a farm labourer.

1861 and the Hillhouse family now farm at Slatehole.  They are William 59, farmer of 124 acres and employing 2 labourers, wife Mary 48, sons David Neill 26 a timber and commission merchant, William 7, and daughters Janet Neill 18, Margaret A R 17, Robina Neill 14. They also have George Molligan 18 and David Parker 19 both ploughmen.

1871 and Alexander Muir 65, a sheep herd and wife Elizabeth 49 live at Slatehole. Also daughter Janet 17, a shirtmaker, and Margaret 12.

1881 Grace Watson 60 widow and housekeeper, daughter Janet 24, Susan Vallance 13, grand daughter, and Jemima Watson grand daughter under 1.

1891 David Brown 32 and wife Elizabeth 38 far farming. They have daughters Maggie 8, and sons Andrew 6, Hugh Y 3, David 1 and visitor Andrew Brown 26 a grocers shopman, and servants William Logan 27, David Kerr 18, Isabella Davidson 22 and Elloner Ruddock 18.

1911 census John Brown 41 Head farmer wife Annie 27 Jessie 1 David Brown brother 39 ploughman and a kitchenmaid. John Brown died at Slatehole in 1945


'By the side of the Lugar Water, below Slatehole farm, a sandstone quarry operated for many years. A newspaper advertisement of 1 September 1834 lists the "stone quarry" as part of the lands of Slatehole, "Balturck, or Barturck, Auchinbay or Auchinbaig, and Dejore" which were offered for sale.'

'On 16 July 1873 John Gallon, of Ponteland, Newcastle-on-Tyne, was drowned when he was leading the Barskimming otter hounds alongside the Lugar Water, near to Slatehole. He was cheering on the hounds when he fell over a precipitous rock, falling into the river below. His body was recovered after a search lasting two hours'.

OAP, Grand Day Out - From this article in 1874, it appears the William Wyllie owns Slatehole and Barturk, although there is no evidence that he lived in either property himself.
