Bankend - Old Cumnock

Bankend House, Cumnock
John Allan 57 grain and cheese merchant land proprietor and farmer of 155 acres wife Grace (Lusk) 41 5 children 5 servants

1881 census Bankend House, shows this to be a substantial holding of 3200 acres, 420 of which arable, and being run by his son Robert Allan 22 - listed as a grain merchant and farmer employing 7 men and 2 boys.  Grace Allan 46 is head of the household son William 14, daughters Grace 12 and Sarah 7. They also have 2 domestic servants, Jane Russell 27 and Agnes Kelly 18 and a farm servant Jess Henry 16.
The Allans must have left for Kirkcudbright around 1900 where Robert Allan contributed to his community. Robert died in Kirkmichael in1921 was buried in Cumnock

In  January 1868,  John Allan  is  invited  to  the  days ploughing at Changue  as Mr Allan , Bridgend - despite  him  using  Bankend House  to  announce  his  son's death  in  1863. In 1861 census  he's  returned at  Bridgend farm, while in  1871  he's down  as  in Bankend House. He tenanted land at Bankend Woodhead Bridgend Dettingen and owned a house and shop in Glaisnock street (1875)
